


n Overboelare (Geraardsbergen), at the intersection of Gaverstraat and Majoor Van Lierdelaan, Wings of Memory pays tribute to the legendary Colonel-pilot Remi “Mony” Van Lierde DFC with an impressive, several-meter-high monument. It was designed by Stefaan Delannoit and developed in collaboration with retired Schendelbeek blacksmith Michel Cloquet.
The monument was inaugurated on September 8, 2011. The ceremony was attended by the then Minister of Defense, Pieter De Crem, Major General Claude Van de Voorde, several family members, and representatives of the city council. Also present were members of the 609 Belgian Branch, the 609 Association, and 609 Squadron, accompanied by Air Commodore William de Goat DSO DFC.
Four F-16 fighter jets flew a Missing Man formation. Students from Sint-Catharinacollege released balloons, while poppies were scattered from a vintage aircraft.
