In December 2018, David Larmuseau, manager of the HuGe Museum, proposed to Wings of Memory that they build a museum in the old farmhouse in Hunnegem. After 15 years of searching and negotiating with the city of Geraardsbergen, this proposal came at just the right time. The members of Wings of Memory had no hesitation and immediately began work on part 1.
On May 30th, the first section of the WWII Air War Museum opened. Numerous invited guests were present, including HuGe Museum Director David Larmuseau, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Jo Heylens, and a delegation from the Geraardsbergen city council.
The first day was a resounding success, with around 100 people visiting the museum.
Part 1 currently features a compilation of various damaged and excavated aircraft from Geraardsbergen and its surrounding municipalities.
In 2021, work began on the installation of Parts 2 and 3. Part 2 displays artifacts from a crashed V2 in Ophasselt, along with an interesting story. Part 3 details the recovery of a Hallifax that crashed in Schendelbeke.
The following year (2022), part 2 and part 3 were opened to the public by HuGe Museum Director David Larmuseau.
